When one person picks up their phone and starts texting at dinner, you know how EVERYONE ELSE does it too? THIS is why.
According to a new study by the University of Michigan, cell phone use is CONTAGIOUS.
In the study, researchers found people are about 40% more likely to check their phone within 10 seconds if a friend they're with starts using their phone first.
Of course, we're not sure how much of that is cell phones being contagious, or just the person reading a social cue . . . like, if your friend is texting, you know they aren't going to be talking to you, so you check your phone.
But according to the researchers, even if it's caused by the alienation you feel when someone else starts using their phone, it STILL makes it contagious.
